Aboriginal Education Day

Education day is organized with the assistance and support of the Elementary Teachers
Federation of Ontario, the Ontario Teachers Federation, the Ontario English Catholic
Teachers Association, Indian and Northern Affairs, the Ministry of Education and Hydro

The students from Hamilton and surrounding areas will have a number of topic
options from as many as hirty teaching stations in the coliseum ranging from heritage and
culture, traditional games, dancing and more. The majority of the teaching stations
are participatory.

All of the teachings are directly tied to the school curriculum for Native Studies
through the use of teaching guides prepared by the Aboriginal Teachers Committee of the
Elementary Teachers Federation of Ontario.

Teachers attending with their classes are provided with printed materials, including the
teaching guides and more to assist them in teaching Native Studies.

Surveys of Teachers in attendance over the past five years have given Education
Day a ninety plus percentage approval rate.

    Teaching Stations Information

    1. There will be 13 areas which will include the following teaching stations, please refer to the floor plan to see locations of stations.
    2. Craft Stations of the Mystery Braid Making, Heart & Stroke Foundation, Soapstone Carving, Aboriginal Reader's Theatre (Performance Theatre), Traditional Games of Lacrosse Demonstration, 3 Way Tug of War and Rattlesnake and Hunter Games, National Defense Pavilion - Obstacle Course for Kids, Marketplace, Lacrosse Pavilion; Fashion Show, and the Official Canadian Aboriginal Festival Booth.
    3. Students will rotate every 30 minutes between teaching stations. A horn to announce the end of each cycle. Note: Each station various in maximum number of students per session. If the station of your choice is full please go to another station or patiently wait for the next 1/ 2 hour.

    LUNCH BREAK: 12 NOON TO 12:30 p.m.
    Teachers and students are welcome to bring their own lunch bags; purchase food at the concession stands located on the concourse level or purchase authentic Aboriginal food located on the field level. Please use the bleacher seats for your lunch break and discard garbage in receptacles.

    During the lunch break, teachers and students are invited to shop in the Marketplace Area to purchase reasonably priced Aboriginal arts and craft items.

    12:30 p.m.
    All students/teachers gather and form a Big Circle (Dance Circle) on the turf (Refer to the floor plan).

    Opening remarks will be given by: Hon. Leona Dombrowsky, Minister of Education; Executive Member, Deb St. Amant of ETFO; President of OTF, Rian McLaughlin; President of OECTA, James Ryan, Lee Walker,Dir. Of Aboriginal Fin. Services, Scotiabank; and Janice Badgley of TransCanada

    Dancing and Singing by traditional dancers. Upon completion of the dance program, the Master of Ceremonies will ask the teachers to select one or two students from their group to join in the dance circle with the traditional dancers in a Friendship Dance. We ask that teachers pre-select 3 students from your class who will be prepared to come forward at that time, as it will get very crowded and some of the smaller traditional dancers and students may accidentally get injured.

    Tips for making the most of Education Day

    The following are a few tips from years past to help you and your students get the most out of your participation in Education Day at the Canadian Aboriginal Festival at Copps Coliseum in Hamilton.

    • Before you come, make sure your students are prepared.
    • Give them a task - a questionnaire, or an activity sheet to keep them focused on the content of the day.
    • Copps Coliseum is a big place. For security reasons, each group of students should have an adult companion.
    • Arrange a meeting place with your students should someone become separated from the rest of your group.
    • There will be a brief welcome and Grand Entry at 1:00 p.m. The stations will open at 10:00 a.m.
    • You will have received a guide in this information package to tell you where to begin. Please bring it with you.
    • The dancing demonstration will take place just after lunch at 12:45 p.m. During lunch, stations will be closed.
    • For information and assistance, look for guides in red and black vests marked volunteer on the back.

    There are usually about 6,500 students in attendance. Many activities are taking place at once. Some of the Copps Coliseum food concessions, as well as traditional food booths, are also open but you may want students to bring their own lunches. Be prepared for lots of distraction for your students. A little pre-planning will ensure a worthwhile learning experience for your group.
